A PhD student position is available at the Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Ultrafast Spectroscopy in Berlin:

Topic: Nonlinear Frequency Conversion to the mid-IR part of the Spectrum (5-15 µm) using Non-Oxide Crystals and their Characterization

Category: Work
Posted by: admin

Context

Pulsed radiation of high power and energy in the 5-15 µm mid-IR spectral range is important for remote

sensing, spectroscopy, medical and defense applications. Coherent light sources emitting in this range are mainly based on frequency down-conversion of near-IR lasers in optical parametric oscillators OPOs)

using nonlinear (non-centrosymmetric) optical crystals. Apart from classical crystals such as ZnGeP2

(ZGP), newly developed materials based on S, Se, Te, P, and As compounds will be studied in this project

and characterized in terms of birefringence, nonlinearity, phase-matching etc. relevant properties. The

target will be to enable longer output wavelengths in the mid-IR and shorter pump wavelengths in the 1

µm spectral range, as well as broad tenability and spectral selectivity. Direct laser pumping as well as

cascade frequency down-conversion will be employed. The work may be supported by a numerical

modeling but will be primarily experimental.

Candidate profile:

- A Master’s degree in Physics, preferably Photonics, or a related field (Engineering)

- Proficiency in English, with written and spoken communication skills

- Strong motivation, collaborative abilities, and effective interpersonal skills

- Practical experience in experimental research

- Experience with numerical modeling (preferred)

What we offer:

- A PhD project within a dynamic and internationally collaborative environment

- Access to state-of-the-art laser infrastructure and experimental facilities

- Competitive salary (full time staff position with all social security contributions in Germany)

Duration and Start: 3 years, starting between 01 Dec. 2025 and 01 March 2026.
